Catonsville tennis team makes net gains on the court

Before the postseason began, Catonsville High head tennis coach Rich Weitkamp talked about taking over a veteran team from a coach who had guided some of the fourth-year seniors for the previous three seasons.

"It's been an acclimation," said Weitkamp, who replaced Cristina Dalton. "It's more like a learning process. I try to cater it to what they want. They are doing well. I'm not sure how much credit I can take."

Now, he can be proud of a the team's 9-1 regular-season record that was followed by a strong postseason.

The Comets produced three championships and sent four athletes to the Maryland State tournament at Olney Manor Regional Park.

After winning a District VI Region title, the No. 2 boys doubles team of Steven Bingaman and Nathan Kesovan entered the state tournament as the sixth seed.

The girls' doubles team of Madi Burinsky and Maggie Besse also qualified for the state tournament after placing second at the regional tournament.

Bingaman and Kesovan continued their success in the first round at states when they defeated Easton's Devin Williams and Luca Tundin 6-2, 6-3.

Their season ended with a 6-1, 6-0 loss to Churchill's Bennett Yang and Austin Yang.

They had defeated top-seeded Gus Carrier and Nic Nelson, of Hereford, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4) in the regional finals.

Bingaman, who posted a 7-2 record for the Comets during the regular season, also captured a Baltimore County championship in boys' No. 2 singles.

Burinsky and Besse were 9-1 during the regular season and also won a county title.

It was the third county crown for Burinsky, who won the first two with Morgan Comisac as her doubles partner.

Comisac was 8-2 during the regular season and teamed up with Van Hmung for third place in mixed doubles at regionals.

They beat Comet teammates Christian Blanch and Lucy Irwin in the consolation finals.

Burinsky and Besse lost in the first round of the state tournament, 6-4, 6-1, to Clear Spring's Kelsi Mentzer and Kate Paylor after an impressive regional tournament.

At regionals, Burinsky and Besse only lost one game while winning their first two matches, 6-1, 6-0, and 6-0, 6-0.

In the finals, they fell 6-0, 4-6, 6-4 to Dulaney's Cindy Shou and Jessica Ye.

Catonsville's No. 1 boys' singles Alex Modell placed fourth at regionals after going 9-1 during the regular season.

Catonsville residents enjoy college lacrosse success

A pair of Colins from Catonsville proved their worth on center stage at the Division I and Division III NCAA lacrosse championships over Memorial Day weekend.

Colin Heacock, a junior for the University of Maryland, sent the Terrapins into the national title game by scoring the game-winning goal 2:41 into overtime in a 15-14 win over Brown University.

Heacock, a Catonsville resident, had two goals and an assist against Brown.

In the championship game, a 14-13 loss to North Carolina, Heacock had two goals and two assists.

The Boys' Latin graduate finished his season with 40 goals and 10 assists. His 40 goals tied Matt Rambo for first in goals and his 50 points tied Bryan Cole for second.

The 2016 USILA/Nike All-American Honorable Mention selection was third on the 17-3 team in ground balls (25) and second in shots taken (107).

Another Colin, Catonsville resident Colin Reymann, of Salisbury University, was named Most Outstanding Player in the Division III national title game.

Reymann had 15 saves, including one off Tufts' John Uppgren shot with six seconds left to preserve the 14-13 win over Tufts in the national title game.

The 5-7 145-pound junior from Mount St. Joseph, faced 50 shots in the title game and tied a career-high in saves for the 11-time national champion Sea Gulls (23-1).

Former Gator on the collegiate diamond

Seton Keough graduate Allison Clampitt played in 19 games in a reserve role for a 27-6 Salisbury University softball squad that lost in the Division III NCAA Norfolk, Virginia Regional Tournament.

The sophomore, who graduated from Seton Keough in 2014, batted .500 with four hits in eight at bats and she scored five runs. In her only at bat in a 14-0 win at Wesley, she belted a double and scored a run.

She had a .556 on base percentage and was flawless in three fielding chances.
