Neighbors know how to brighten up Orchard Mills [Lutherville-Timonium]

What a busy and bright holiday season for the residents in 21093! It was heartwarming to know that our neighbors have holiday traditions that bring their communities together and literally brighten their neighborhoods.

The community of Orchard Hills, established in the 1950s, has been holding an annual holiday lights competition since the 1980s. Each year, many residents deck their homes with gorgeous lights and decoration in the hopes of winning a gift card and the admiration of their fellow neighbors. Orchard Hills is a spirited community located between Bellona Avenue and York Road in Timonium and consists of 437 homes. Each December, 16 homes are chosen to win a gift card for the best decorations. Half of the awards are chosen by a panel of children and the other half by a panel of adults. Thank you to Rosemary Carey, treasurer of the community for the past five years, who contacted me regarding this wonderful event. She works alongside community President Donnie Saine to bring neighbors together.

The first place winner of the children's favorite decoration was Theresa Foster. She has entered the contest since 199, and also won first place two years ago. She enjoys "bringing smiles and making people happy" with her displays. She gives credit to Frank Eardley, who is a "huge help" in setting up. Other proud winners were from Burleigh Road, Dublin Drive, McPherson Court, Othoridge Road, Warwick Drive and Westbury Road.

Orchard Hills isn't the only neighborhood holding decorating contests during the holidays. The Dulaney Valley Improvement Association wants to thank everyone in their neighborhood who decorates and "makes their community smile." Mars gift certificates were given in two divisions: daytime and night time displays. Night displays winners were: the Traceys, first place; the Bosleys, second; and Michelle Felix, third place. Day display winners were the Griffins, first; the Goldsmiths, second place; and the Uptons, third.

Finally, congratulations to the students at Ridgely Middle School for their third annual Stuff-a-Bus event held in early December. The Student Government Association, along with teachers Ryan Brown and Elizabeth Charette helped collect more than 5,000 items for donation to local food banks. Their students are proud to do their part in giving back to their community.
