Congratulations to Jim Heilman, of Lutherville, for his achievements as a runner and student-athlete. On Aug. 6, Jim's average running time of 5:21 per mile led to a first-place finish in his age group (20-29) as a participant in the Orioles/Casey Cares 5K Race. He finished second overall among all runners.
In April, McDaniel College named Jim, a 21-year-old senior, the recipient of two annual awards given to student-athletes. They are the Michael Whitman Memorial Award, given to a runner who possesses a great work ethic and serves as an ambassador to the school, and the Brian T. Russo '86 Memorial Award, given in honor of the Dulaney High School graduate and championship runner who passed away unexpectedly in 2005.
"It was a huge honor to get both of those awards," said Jim, who is majoring in Exercise Science and minoring in German.
Jim also runs on the school's cross country and indoor and outdoor track teams. This fall, he will captain the cross country team. His goal is to help his team get better.
This summer, Jim is keeping busy serving as a cross country coach at his alma mater, Concordia Preparatory School, in Towson, and working as a fitness coach at the Towson Y.
At Hampton Elementary School, it might seem as if someone is missing when school starts as Diane Thibeault won't be there. Mrs. Thibeault recently retired after 21 years there as a fourth-grade teacher. New to Hampton this year will be, in kindergarten, Anganette Henry, as a part-time reading specialist, and, in the fifth grade, Matthew Carp and Diana Williams.
Pot Springs Elementary School welcomes Jordyn Hoffman as a fourth-grade teacher.
Timonium Methodist Church will sponsor a series of community forums this fall, sharing information on topics such as aging, social justice, children and parenting. Titled, Together We Can, these monthly gatherings will feature speakers who will share information and direct people to resources for additional assistance.
First on the schedule will be a discussion on dementia and Alzheimer's disease. It will be held on Saturday, Sept. 17 from 1 to 3:30 p.m. in the church's Fellowship Hall and is free to the public. Starting with a presentation from Ari Mittleman, representing the Alzheimer's Association, participants will then be able to attend classes specific to their own concerns.
