Pi, pie and pizza celebration at Pot Spring Elementary [Cockeysville]

March 14 was cause for celebration at Pot Spring Elementary School during a fun-filled Pizza and Pi Night party.The number 3.1415 (a.k.a. pi) was the star of the show as nearly 150 students, parents and teachers explored the meaning of pi in all sorts of ways.

Pizza for dinner with pie for dessert along with hula hooping to pi songs, a ball toss, basketball anda Frisbee toss made for an entertaining evening.Students were delighted to throw whipped cream pies at targets and a lucky few got to smash a pie in the face of a teacher or parent.Some brave souls that took a pie in the face included Principal Jane Martin, Assistant Principal Stephanie Barnes, kindergarten teacher Trina Cibor and parents Jill Garofalo, Paul Katz, Marie Depew and Kelley McGeehan. A Pie Silent Auction featuring homemade pies made for a sweet ending to the evening.

"How My Optimism Will Help Me Press on to Greater Achievements of the Future?" was the question that students from St. Joseph School in Cockeysville answered as a part of the Timonium Optimist Club's Oratorical Contest.This competition allows students to gain experience in public speaking and to compete for scholarship awards by giving a four- to five-minute speech on the topic.These students had previously won top honors during the schoolwide competition and moved on to compete at the Optimist Club's dinner meeting on March 16. Congratulations to seventh-grader Sam Becker and sixth-grader Sean Rogers for first and second place honors, respectively, in the boys' division and to eighth-grader Grace Wayson for a second-place finish among the girls.Other competitors from St. Joseph's included, Lily Cecil, Joey Kihn and Olivia Wayson. Good luck to Sean as he now continues onto the Zone competition with the chance of advancing to the District Oratorical Contest in Ocean City in May.

Erin go Bragh! Several of our young ladies danced their way through the streets of Baltimore as part of the annual St. Patrick's Day Parade.Kendall Wilson, Ashley and Emily Bogdanowicz, Sarah Frohme, Shannon Trageser, Sasha and Marianne Howard and Hannah and Olivia Snoops showed off their Irish dancing skills as a part of a large group of about 75 girls from the McHale School of Irish Dance.Under the leadership of Linda McHale Poggi of Cockeysville, the school focuses on traditional Irish step dance for children.

Come on out and join the fun as Faith Lutheran Church hosts a Quarter Auction on Friday, March 27 at 7 p.m. to raise funds to send their youth to the National Youth Gathering in Detroit.Faith Lutheran hopes to send 11 of their high school students to join 36,000 other youths from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America as they descend upon Detroit this coming July for hands-on learning about social justice and very intentional mission work: in food banks, refurbishing homes and cleaning up the city. Paddles are $5 each and there will be 20 vendors on hand, including Thirty-one, Pampered Chef and Lamb 'n' Ewe. Faith Lutheran Church is located at 8 Sherwood Road in Cockeysville.
