We have some budding young poets right here in Cockeysville. Ava Ciurca and Avery Heath, both 4th grade students at May Chapel Elementary, recently had their poetry published in Stepping Stones Magazine. Both girls were named winners in the magazine's 2015 Asian Celebration Poetry contest and had their haiku poetry published in the international, multi-cultural magazine. The magazine celebrates art and original writings from all over the world and Ava and Avery also provided their own nature artwork to illustrate their poems. Congratulations, Ava and Avery - thanks for sharing your poetry with us all.
Rhino Tales by Ava Ciurca
Rhino was walking,
He stomped so hard that he shook,
We were all running.
The Cat by Avery Heath
The Cat walks slyly,
through the dark forest, it kills,
in the pain that stays
Congratulations to the Cockeysville Rec Council's Dodgers as they were crowned champions of the 9 -10 Boys league after a thrilling, come from behind win against a worthy opponent in the Orioles. Led by Coaches Scott Ator and Steve Labbe, the Dodgers were able to score 3 runs in the bottom of the 6th to pull off an exciting 3 to 2 victory. Coach Ator explained, "I was really impressed with how our whole team kept their focus and kept playing hard even when things weren't going our way. The Orioles are a great team and they played well all night, but we managed to scratch together
enough hits in the end to pull it out. I'm really happy for all the kids."
Way to go, Jason Ator, Max Edwards, Kian Jacob, Luke Labbe, Sean Pullen, Camden Shepherd, Eric Sidle, Brendan Smith, Korey Webb, Michael Zachary and Eric Zhang.
Summertime is almost here and that means it's time for the Baltimore County Public Library's Summer Reading program. Stop on by to sign up for the program and to check out new murals decorating the Cockeysville branch in support of this year's theme: "Unmasked" and "Every Hero Has a Story."
The members of the National Junior Art Honor Society from Cockeysville Middle School are responsible for this beautiful work with each member selecting a "Super Hero" character that they painted on the mural. The members worked together in groups of 2-4, creating the murals. These talented 7th and 8th grade students, Emilie Bowerman, Lauren Cole, Bea DeGuzman, Reshma Ganesh, Enna Gurung, Sasha Howard, Meredith Kossoff, John Lin, Rachel Moss, Angela Qian, Lucia Qian, Amanda Shapiro, Sarah Shen and Nguyen Thai, are under the direction of art teacher, Patricia Endres.
