It is the season when deer start appearing more and more on our roads. We have observed several deer carcasses lying on the side of the road after being struck by vehicles. It is so sad to see. I cannot think of a more gentle, beautiful creature then a deer. Not all deer deaths are caused by vehicles.
But many are due to the excessive speeding on Padonia Road between Interstate 83 and Falls Road. When the speed limit is 40 mph, vehicles go 50-plus. When the speed limit is 30 mph westbound toward Falls Road, vehicles go 40 to 50-plus. Over the past 15 years, the open space and woods have been vastly cleared for more and more houses, condos, apartments and even a school, all of which have caused an enormous increase in traffic and much less areas of natural habitat.
Hopefully drivers will start being more attentive this season as to the movement of deer.As a reminder, please slow down! That will give you more time to react to avoid a collision with an animal, as well as save you from expensive repairs to your vehicle.
Perhaps the Baltimore County Police department could add a radar unit periodically.
