The Towson High girls basketball season has been going along just fine with the Generals getting off to their best start in years at 9-2. But visiting Catonsville rained on Towson’s parade Wednesday night.
It was actually a downpour.
The Comets cruised to a 64-24 victory as freshman forward Jasmine Dickey scored 22 points.
“I give a lot of credit to the Towson coach (Rebecca Moyer),” Catonsville coach Mike Mohler said. “She’s doing a great job. They were just a bit outmanned. It’s just as simple as that.”
Dickey, who also totaled six steals and five assists, leads a talented team in scoring this season and she might have been able to carry the Comets (10-4) to a victory all by herself against Towson, but Mohler is glad she didn’t have to.
Plenty of her teammates — especially Catonsville’s young players — got involved as 11 Comets scored.
Freshman guard Jemelia Barrett added eight points and freshman forward Stashia Daniels contributed seven.
Senior forward Shelby Fragetta led Towson with six points and seven rebounds.
Fragetta and Moyer would like to put the game behind them. The farther, the better.
The Generals committed 32 turnovers and shot 18 percent (6-for-33) from the field.
“We just killed ourselves,” Moyer said. “Passing wise. We were trying to force things, and we weren’t helping each other out on defense.”
Towson only scored two points in the first 3:40 as Catonsville opened on a 9-2 run.
The Comets boosted their lead to 14-4 by the end of the first quarter.
Catonsville opened the second quarter on a 12-3 run and led 31-12 at halftime.
Dickey had 10 points at the intermission.
“She is going to have one heck of a career, but she has a lot of room to grow,” Mohler said. “And you can’t teach some of the skills she has.”
The pace of the game seemed to bother Mohler. Forty-four fouls were called.
The Comets went 13-for-29 from the line.
"It was sloppy for both teams," Mohler said. "It was rough and tumble. It was like a rugby match for a while."
