Come to the fair and the pony races

The Maryland State Fair runs Aug. 28 through Sept. 7 at the fairgrounds in Timonium.

The Shetland Steeplechase race begins at 5 p.m. on Aug. 28 at the track on the fairgrounds.

The pony races start at 10:30 a.m. on Aug. 29.

The first race on Aug. 29 is a lead line trot race for riders younger than age 7. That race will be followed by small pony, Shetland pony, medium pony and large pony races.

Registration is $25 per pony and entries must be received by noon on Aug. 24.

This year's fair will host the first Maryland Horse Festival/Horse Land that features 11 days of free equine entertainment, events and education.

Activities include bull riding, barrel races, mule races and stick horse races.

Admission to the fair is $8 for adults, $6 for seniors 62 and older, $3 for children 6-11. Children 5 and under are free,
