The transition from the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conference to the A Conference was difficult last year for Gilman's basketball team.
The Greyhounds were often overmatched and finished 6-12.
Gilman has room for significant improvement this winter, and returns five starters. The Greyhounds are thinking playoffs as they get ready to start their season Tuesday against Georgetown Prep in Roland Park at 6:15.
“We have the drive right now and the guys that want to be great,” coach Owen Daly said. “I think we are on the verge of being a good team. We didn’t reach our goal of the playoffs (last year), but we were competitive in almost every game. This year, we have to win some of those close games.”
Senior forward Kai Locksley (6 feet 5) is the Greyhounds’ top scoring option. He averaged a team-leading 15 points per game last year to earn all-conference honors.
Locksley, a three-year starter who has committed to play football as a quarterback at Florida State University, plays solid defense and is a strong rebounder as well.
“He is going to be our leader and is a guy who can get a double-double in every game,” Daly said. “He is an extremely versatile player and can defend anybody in the league.”
Junior guard guard Everett Winchester (6-5), a three-year starter, sets up teammates well and is a tough defender.
“Everett brings so much to the team at both ends of the floor,” Daly said. “He just makes other people better.”
Locksley and Winchester are playing with three sophomores -- forward Tyler Foster (6-4) and guards Donald Duncan (5-11) and Douglas Cooper (6-3).
Cooper, who averaged eight points last year, isn't likely to play until January because of a knee injury.
Cooper’s absence opens a spot for junior guard Bryce Butler (5-11), a transfer from Patterson Mill, who gives the Greyhounds another scoring threat.
“He could be a deadly offensive player,” Daly said. “Sometimes, 2 guards get stereotyped as a shooter, but he is an excellent passer, too.”
Daly also expects production from junior center/forward Devery Hamilton (6-7, 265 pounds).
Senior guards Matt Egan (6-4) and Torben Ginsberg (5-11) and senior forwards Ben Moore (6-4), Zack Cohen (6-4) and Ben Gantt (6-4) provide solid options off the bench.
“This is the most depth I’ve had by far,” Daly said.
