Baltimore County has added 31 drop boxes around the county to handle the volume of requested mail-in ballots.

As of Friday, nearly 91,800 ballots have already been submitted in the county. That’s more than 16% of the county’s total active electorate of 565,000 voters, according to the Maryland Board of Elections.

The county’s elections board expects an overall turnout of around 419,000 residents, according to a news release. More than 234,000 county residents have requested mail-in ballots — including more than 155,300 registered Democrats and 41,500 Republicans, according to state data.

The drop boxes are available for voters who requested a mail-in ballot but don’t want to go through the United States Postal Service. Those voters can drop ballots into any one of the 44 drop boxes in the county; 13 drop boxes were already placed at the county’s early voting sites, the Baltimore County Board of Elections headquarters and Hereford High School.

Those other 13 ballot boxes will remain available through Election Day, Nov. 3, the county said. Residents who requested a mail-in ballot can drop it off in any one of the ballot boxes until 8 p.m. on Election Day.

Baltimore County, Maryland’s third most populous county, requested the additional ballot boxes Sept. 8 due to high demand, the county said, and was the last jurisdiction in the state to do so. The state elections board ordered ballot boxes on a rolling basis for local boards, with the first boxes being installed about a month before Election Day.

By comparison, Baltimore City, a jurisdiction with almost 234,000 fewer residents than Baltimore County, has had 33 ballot drop boxes available throughout October.

Early voting sites will open Oct. 26 and will run through Nov. 2, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. On Election Day, 42 voting centers will be open for in-person voting. And with Maryland allowing same-day registration for the first time this election, those who wish to vote but are not registered may do so at the voting sites.

Officials have urged residents who want to mail their voted ballot to make sure the envelope is postmarked on or before Nov. 3. The ballot must be received by the local board of elections by 10 a.m. on Nov. 13.

A map of all the ballot boxes can be viewed online.
