Final votes tallied in tight school board race

As of Monday evening, Nov. 19, the Prince George's County Board of Elections had finished its canvassing of absentee and provisional ballots from the Nov. 6 elections, and Zabrina Epps has won the District 1 Board of Education race.

The first-time candidate beat out David Murray, who ran for the seat in 2010 against then-incumbent Rosalind Johnson. Johnson resigned from the board last month after it was discovered she was living outside her district, a violation of Maryland law.

The final tally had Epps with 17,621 votes, against Murray's 17,165.

Epps will be sworn in Dec. 3.

PTSA president coordinates food drive

Ron Dortch, PTSA president at Dwight D. Eisenhower Middle School, organized a food drive with Walmart to help feed less fortunate families in the area for Thanksgiving.

Dortch picked up the food from the Laurel store last week, and 21 Eisenhower families will receive the food at school this week. Other donations will be distributed to Laurel Elementary families. The food from Walmart was provided through donations or steep discounts.

Board of Education to host 'leadership profile' meeting

The Prince George's County Board of Education is holding a meeting Thursday, Dec. 13, at 7 p.m. in the board room of the Sasscer Administration Building, 14201 School Lane, to develop a leadership profile for the school system's next superintendent.

The meeting is open to the public, but there will be no public comments.

The board worked to gather input on qualities the next superintendent should have through online surveys and community meetings. The board is in the process of looking for a replacement for William Hite, who left Prince George's County Public Schools to take the top job in Philadelphia schools earlier this fall. Alvin Crawley is serving as interim superintendent until a new superintendent is named in the spring.
