After 25 years, Maggie Hubbard leaves St. Mary of the Mills School

After a quarter of a century, St. Mary of the Mills School in Laurel will be losing a familiar face: Maggie Hubbard is leaving to become director of special education for the Archdiocese of Washington.

Hubbard has been at St. Mary's for 25 years, as a first-grade teacher for 11 years, then as assistant principal for 14 years.


In a news release from the school, Hubbard was described as "an advocate for students with special needs" who "has received numerous awards and recognition for her work in this area."

Hubbard's last day at St. Mary of the Mills is Oct. 19. The school is hosting a prayer service, which is open to the public, at 1:15 p.m. on that day.


Laurel High teachers triumph at kickball tournament

A last-minute team formed by Laurel High teachers and administrators took first place in the Recreation Division at the Side By Side Kicks for a Cause kickball tournament Oct. 6.

The team, was made up of Laurel Principal Dwayne Jones; Robert Giuliani; Michael Hines; Chris Wenchel; Neyla Rivera; Andrea Morris; Sandra Johnson; and Annette Williams, and her sons, Langston and Jameson.

The Laurel High team defeated the team from Double Dipper in Laurel to win the division.

"We had a great time for a great cause and next year we will be back to defend our title," Jones said in an email to staff.

Region celebrates Lights On Afterschool

On Oct. 18, community members will gather at the Vansville Community Center, from 2-5 p.m., to celebrate the 13th annual Lights On Afterschool. The annual event is held to highlight the importance of after-school programs that provide a safe place for children and young adults to learn.

At an open house, children who participate in after-school activities at the center will be able to demonstrate what they do and what they have learned through those programs.

The Vansville event is sponsored by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission Department of Parks and Recreation, Vansville Community Center, Maryland Out of School Time Network, Maryland Hunger Solutions, Share our Strength, and the Capital Area Food Bank. The organizations will highlight how they have incorporated the At Risk Afterschool Meals Program into their work with local youths.

According to a news release, the event is an opportunity for students to celebrate the skills learned in after-school programs, and a chance to engage the community by supporting these programs.

Vansville Community Center is located at 6813 Ammendale Road, in Beltsville.

21st District Delegation latest to endorse Epps


On Oct. 8, the District 21 state delegation — Sen. Jim Rosapepe and Dels. Barbara Frush, Ben Barnes and Joseline Pena-Melnyk — announced their endorsement of Laurel resident Zabrina Epps for the District 1 seat on the Prince George's County Board of Education.

Epps came in second in April's primary, with 31 percent of the vote, behind the other District 1 candidate, Bowie resident David Murray, who garnered 56 percent of the vote.

Epps has also been endorsed by the Prince George's County Educators Association, County Executive Rushern Baker III and Laurel Mayor Craig Moe.
