At the end of the month, L.A. Fitness members belonging to the company's club on Route 40 will have to find another workout spot.

The gym is closing its doors for good June 30.

"We probably scan in about 300, 350 [members] a day," said aCatonsville L.A. Fitness employee, Mercedes Hernandez, who works at the club as the operations manager for the front desk.

Judging by the number of people using the facility on a regular basis, she said, she doesn't think the closure is related to membership.

"It doesn't make any sense," she said.

There was no response to attempts to contact the corporate office in California to find out what led to the decision to close the Catonsville gym.

L.A. Fitness took over the location from Bally Total Fitness in 2011 as part of a move by L.A. Fitness to purchase 171 Bally locations nationwide, including 12 in Maryland.

The closest L.A. Fitness location is in Lansdowne, on Washington Boulevard.

According to Hernandez, current Catonsville club members will have their home club switched to the Lansdowne gym and be upgraded to multi-club membership, which allows them to access any L.A. Fitness facility, with the exception of "Premier Plus" clubs.

About half of the staff at the Catonsville location will have the option to transfer to another L.A. Fitness gym, said Hernandez, who said she will be transferring this summer.
