The girls basketball game played on the night of the third annual Pink Out, to benefit breast cancer awareness at Mount de Sales, will never be forgotten for a pair of Madisons.
Severn junior Madison McDaniel (31 points) and Mount de Sales freshman Madison Burris (25 points) combined for 56 points in the game won by the visiting Admirals 62-51.
The 5-foot-6-inch Burris (12.5 points per game) did most of her damage from the outside as she canned seven three-pointers.
The 6-foot McDaniel, who went over 1,000 career points earlier this season, was unstoppable inside.
"She's as good as I've had in many years," Severn coach Chuck Taylor said. "I can't say enough about her."
McDaniel, who also had 12 rebounds, scored 13 of her points in the first quarter, but the Admirals couldn't pull away because Burris was 4-for-4 from three-point land.
"I just felt good. I felt like I was on," Burris said.
Mount de Sales trailed 19-18 after the first quarter, but Severn switched from a zone to a man-to-man defense and the Sailors only scored two points on 1 of 15 from the field and they trailed 34-20 at halftime.
"Our second quarter is what did us in," Sailor coach Trish Armstrong said. "It's an even game other than that quarter."
McDaniel also did the Sailors in by scoring half of Severn's total points in the game.
"We have to work on containing Maddie (McDaniel)," Armstrong said. "She is the best big girl in Anne Arundel County."
When McDaniel gets touches the Admirals are extremely dangerous at the offensive end.
"I think our team strategy was to work our plays and reverse it around and pass it inside and out, pass it to me and I turn and look for a shot or pass it back out and I think that works pretty well for our team," McDaniel said.
Stopping the sharpshooting freshman on the Sailors didn't work well in the first and third quarters.
In the third quarter, Burris sunk three treys and had a fast break layup to spark a 10-0 run that cut the deficit to 34-30 with 4:53 left in the quarter.
"She [Burris] was really good," McDaniel said. "I'm so shocked she's a freshman. That's incredible."
Amanda Donovan (10 points, 5 rebounds, 4 steals) also had a strong third quarter for the Sailors as she scored six points, had three steals, three rebounds and an assist.
Severn led 47-40 heading into the fourth quarter and the Sailors got it to 51-47 after Bridget Williams (7 points) nailed a three-pointer with 4:27 remaining.
Two free throws by Caroline Steele made it 53-47, but Maisie Birrane (5 points, 6 rebounds) cut it to 53-49 after a pass from Donovan with 3:47 left.
But, that was the only field goal the Sailors would get the rest of the game and the Admirals put the game away with free throws.
One of the reasons for the scoring drought was that Burris got limited touches down the stretch and scored only two points in the final quarter.
"We really tried to keep out best defender and as soon as she got the ball and we made sure there was somebody on her and I think that worked for us," McDaniel said.
It was similar to the extra attention they gave to her in the second quarter.
"We did go to the man because that little no. 3 [Burris] is as good shooter as I've seen in many years and she still got her shots, but we forced her to take them from just a step further out," Miller said.
The loss dropped the Sailors to 7-6 in the Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conference and 11-8 overall, while Severn improved to 9-3 and 12-7 overall.
"Despite the loss, we are not far off from them," said Armstrong, who will enjoy watching her freshman Burris continue to impress.
Her seven three-pointers were a season-high and gave her 50 for the season.
"She has that capability, but in the beginning of the year she kind of gave way to the older kids, but now her game is excelling," Armstrong said. "Her game is going go the next level and she is well accepted and the kids love her and she is just going to get better and better. She is the real deal."
