When the Catonsville recreation softball season ended, the players on the Catonsville Chaos 12-and-under squad came together to form a focused unit of all-stars.

That dedication paid off when they Chaos won their final tournament of the summer.

The 12U all-stars captured first place at the Howard County Summer Sizzler at North Laurel Park on July 25-26.

The tournament was a United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA) recreation all-star tournament.

"We finally got it together in the end," said coach Tim Marsiglia, whose squad went 5-0 over two days. "The previous week, the heat beat us, but we were finally able to get it together mentally and physically."

They were 2-0 in pool play on Saturday and followed up by going 3-0 on Sunday.

Dani Barklow was the winning pitcher in the games on the final day.

"She is doing really well," Marsiglia said.

Pitchers Brooke Marsiglia and Hannah Ripley were kings of the hill on Saturday.

In the championship game on Sunday, the Chaos defeated the Bull Dogs, of Pennsylvania, 10-7.

A day earlier, they nipped the Bull Dogs, 6-5, during pool play.

The big blow in the title game was a two-run home run from Don'ya Truesdale that gave the Chaos the lead.

Truesdale and Megan Spicer are the only girls who will be moving up to the 14U age group next summer.

Barklow, who pitched a shutout in a 12-0 victory over the Ashburn Pride, of Virginia, in the semifinals and Katie Moran, both 10 years old, are eligible to play in the 12U group for two more seasons.

Tara Bowen, Brynn Bielski, Lillian Laasen, Kristina Dayhoff, Grace Bielski, Megan McDaniel, Caelyn Voss and Morgan Mclain have one more season of eligibility in 12U.

Marsiglia admired the way the players came together after playing for two teams simultaneously during the summer.

"We were rec all-stars, but we used the Catonsville Chaos name," Marsiglia said. "They had to play rec ball too and that split us apart which made it harder for us to coach them. It made it a little tough, but once rec was over we buckled down and were able to get stronger as a team."

It was Marsiglia's first coaching experience and he praised co-head coach Angie Barklow.

"I learned a lot from her during the season," he said. "She is one of the reasons we made it to where we did."

Next year, Marsiglia plans to take the team to full travel mode and compete in C Division tournaments.
