Baltimore County cancels school again on Friday; record low follows storm

The heavy snow storm that lived up to its advance billing prompted Baltimore County to cancel school for a second consecutive day on Friday.

The sun came out Friday morning, helping the temperature rise from a record low 10 degrees for March 6, although it's not expected to get above the high 20s.

Snow began to fall in Baltimore County early Thursday morning, part of a winter storm predicted by the National Weather Service to bring 4 to 8 inches of snow, prompting the county to launch their Snow Emergency Plan at 7:30 a.m.

Such a plan prohibits motorists from parking cars on designated snow emergency routes,  and requires cars to either use snow tires or chains, or have all weather tires.

Baltimore County spokeswoman Lauren Watley cautioned motorists to stay off the roads if at all possible.

"If you're able to park your car off the street, it makes plowing roads much easier for our crews," Watley said.

Watley said crews from the county's Department of Public Works began bracing for the storm Wednesday night, after weather forecasters predicted snow to begin overnight.

Crews are deployed countywide with 538 personnel and 435 snow plows and salt trucks, she said.

"All they can really do now is wait for the precipitation to turn over to snow," Watley said, adding that snow began to fall around 6:30 a.m. in Towson.
