Halethorpe man on trial for murder found dead in jail cell

A Halethorpe man charged in his girlfriend's death was found dead in his jail cell last month, closing the case, court records show.

County officials said Roland Damie Haywood, 43, was found at 3:06 a.m. on Nov 19, for an apparent suicide at the Baltimore County Detention Center. He was taken to University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Haywood's trial was scheduled for Feb. 18. On May 17, Baltimore County tactical officers forced their way into his home in the 4700 block of Belwood Green, where they found Haywood unconscious next to Kathleen Washington, 45, in an upstairs bedroom, according to charging documents.

Haywood's brother called 911 saying Haywood told him he just killed "his baby's mother" and threatened to kill himself by overdoing on Oxycodone, the documents said.

Washington had a belt wrapped around her neck and was pronounced dead at the scene, the document said. She also appeared to have several stab wounds. Haywood was unconscious and taken to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center for treatment.

Police recovered a knife covered with blood in a dresser in the bedroom of the home.
