Head of the Class: Locals scoring honors, degrees

Paige Cook, of Parkton, recently participated in a Spring Break trip to Japan, as part of her "Japanese Politics and Foreign Policy" class at Washington College, Chestertown.

Olivia A. Cypull, of Baldwin, a senior at Loch Raven High School is a National Merit Scholarship Finalist. Olivia has been awarded a National Merit James E. Casey Scholarship, through the UPS Foundation. The Scholars are selected from students who advance to the finalist level of the National Merit Scholarship competition and meet the criteria of a corporate sponsor.

Jillian Unitas, of Baldwin, graduated with a bachelor of arts from Flagler College, St. Augustine, Fla. on April 21.

Baltimore County Public Schools' second annual systemwide Chess Championship, was held April 14, at Cockeysville Middle School. Individual winners include Mike Davis, (fifth) and Mike Brown, (eighth) of Hereford High School (high school division) and Steven Chai, (sixth) of Sparks Elementary (elementary school division).

Parkton American Legion Post 256 held its annual Americanism essay contest, "How Can I Show My Patriotism in My Community." Jonathan Marker, a fifth-grader at Fifth District and Joshua Beach, an eighth-grader at Our Lady of Grace, placed third in their grade levels were honored at a banquet on May 3 in Baltimore.

Alex Carter, of Hereford High School, recieved a college scholarship of $3,000 from First Financial Federal Credit Union based on his academic achievement and commitment to school and community.

Renee Wilson, of Hereford High School, was honored at Baltimore County Public Schools Career and Technology Education Recognition Dinner, on April 25 at a banquet at Martin's West in Woodlawn receiving a $1,000 scholarship for Environmental, Agricultural, and Natural Resources: Agricultural Science.

Steven Cusick, of Phoenix, was named to the fall 2011 dean's list at Shenandoah University, Winchester, Va.

Isabelle Goelet, of Sparks, attending Juniata College, Huntingdon, Pa. will be interning at the Denver Art Museum, where she will be working with the Community and Family Programs coordinator. Goelet is a senior studying museum studies and art history.

Camille Campanella, of Glen Arm, was inducted into the Zeta Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa at St. Mary's College of Maryland in April.

Prettyboy Elementary School's STEM Fair was held on April 17. Winners as follows:

Fourth grade: Hailey Apperson, first place; Ben Dodson, second place and Billy Hartlove, third place.

Fifth grade: Helena Rudolph, first place; Maya Seitz, second place and Jake Bass, third place.

Erin O'Hara-Ingram, of Parkton, has been named to the dean's list for the winter 2012 term. Central Penn College, Summerdale, Pa.

Kathryn Thompson, of Glen Arm, was named to the dean's list for fall 2011 at Villanova University, Villanova, Pa.

Blaine Dulkerian, of White Hall, was recently inducted into Quinnipiac University's Tau Delta chapter of Lambda Pi Eta, the national communication honor society at Quinnipiac University, Hamden, Conn.

Kelsey Mattolla, of Monkton, a member of the women's soccer team at Millersville, received the Maryann Kitson Raspen Scholarship in Women's Athletics and Erin Petty, of Jarrettsville, received the Mary Slokum-Sproul Prizes Award Millersville University of Pennsylvania at the Honors and Awards Convocation on April 28.

Trisha Wetzelberger, of Monkton, graduated from Concordia University in Portland, Ore. at its commencement ceremony on May 5, 2012. Wetzelberger received a Master of Education.

Alexandra Paetow, of Parkton was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa at Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, N.C.

Allison Silber, of Phoenix was inducted into McDonogh School's chapter of the Cum Laude Society, a national honor society recognizing academic achievement on April 23. The Cum Laude Society is modeled after the Phi Beta Kappa collegiate honor society.
