Calvert Hall went on a 3-1 closing run in the final 4:44 to subdue two-time defending Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland champion Loyola Blakefield, 16-14, Tuesday afternoon in Towson.

The victory snapped the Cardinals' three-year home losing streak to the Dons, who went unbeaten in the MIAA last season.

Carpenter Warren and Steve Roberts led the way for the winners, scoring six goals each in the up-tempo battle in which the home team never trailed — but could not put away its archrivals until the late going.

Loyola, on the other hand, spread out its scoring much more evenly behind four-goal scorer James Cameron.

After goals by Jack Pagano and Roberts gave the Cardinals (7-0) a 15-13 lead with 3:35 left, Thomas Brennen countered for the Dons (4-2) on a severe-angle shot that beat Calvert Hall senior goalie Ben Weise to the inside post a minute later.

But Weise had the last laugh when he made a remarkable point-blank save on a Dons' fastbreak attempt with 2:09 remaining and the crowd roaring.

"The game was so intense, I just tried to react to things as they happened," he said.

Calvert Hall coach Mark Rich said his goalie made a play when his team needed it most in a match that by no means puts Calvert Hall is in the conference driver's seat.

"They're the defending champs, and we know they'll get much better," the 2004 Calvert Hall grad said about Loyola.

Rich was not thrilled that his team allowed 14 goals while his counterpart, Loyola's Keith Schertle, figured his team should have had a few more scores.

"I think we only scored twice on nine or 10 ejections," said Schertle, alluding to the Dons' squandering several scoring chances with a man-advantage after Cardinal players were whistled for fouls. "I think we're ahead of the game defensively, but we have to score more on man-up."
