Head of the Class

The National Merit Scholarship Corp. announced that four Baltimore County Public School students are among the 2,900 high school seniors who have won scholarships sponsored by colleges and universities. Local honored students are:

Elizabeth Demetrides, of Cockeysville, who attends Dulaney High School and wants to pursue a career in physics/scientific research; and

Brett Turlington, of Cockeysville, who attends Dulaney High School and plans to become an economist or stockbroker.

 

Tim Ayd, son of Mary and Al Ayd, of Lutherville, recently participated in Salisbury University's community service project, The Big Event. During the project, hundreds of SU students helped university neighbors with household chores such as raking leaves, cleaning attics and painting. Ayd is a freshmen majoring in business and is a Presidential Citizen Scholar. He is a 2010 graduate of the Carver Center.

 

Thirty-five Maryland students with disabilities were scheduled to receive scholarships from the Michael Cardin Scholarship Committee of the Maryland Association of Nonpublic Special Education Facilities at a June 6 ceremony in Howard County. The students have overcome physical, emotional and learning disabilities and were nominated for the awards by their schools.

The 2011 Cardin Scholarship Winners from the area were:

Tyler Brodsky, a Baltimore County Public Schools student attending the Maryland School for the Blind, who will use his scholarship for piano lessons; and

Joshua Taylor, a BCPS student attending St. Elizabeth School who will use his scholarship to attend Single Step Warehouse Program – Forklift Certification.

 

The following students received degrees from Bucknell University:

Stacy Caspari, of Lutherville-Timonium, daughter of William and Nancy Caspari, of Lutherville-Timonium, and a graduate of Notre Dame Preparatory School, graduated with a bachelor's degree in biology;

Stephanie Diegel, of Lutherville-Timonium, daughter of Sandra Diegel, of Lutherville-Timonium, and a graduate of Maryvale Preparatory School, graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. She is a member of Tau Beta Pi honor society.

Sarah O'Laughlin, of Cockeysville, daughter of Edward and Kathleen O'Laughlin, of Hunt Valley, and a graduate of Notre Dame Preparatory School, graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in economics and political science.
