World Trade Center artifact comes to Middle River

The Middle River Volunteer Ambulance Rescue Co. has acquired a piece of rusted steel from the fallen World Trade Center with plans to make the artifact the focal point of its lobby. Volunteers will make a temporary public display for the 2- by 2-foot section, until a decision is reached on a permanent placement.

The artifact, which members say will serve as a visible reminder of the sacrifices made on Sept. 11, 2001, came to the station on Leland Avenue after a year of negotiations with the Port Authority in New York and New Jersey.

"We may eventually give it to the Fire Museum in Timonium for a permanent display," said Capt. Charles Wilkinson. "But for now, it's in our lobby and the public can view it there."
