Suspect in Baltimore arson surrenders at county home

A 54-year-old man suspected of setting a Baltimore fire surrendered without incident after he barricaded himself Tuesday morning in his Milford Mill home, according to city and county police.

Randall Martin of the 3600 block of Bellmore Road faces first-degree arson and other related charges, said Baltimore Police spokesman Detective Kevin Brown.

Police received a report shortly before 4 a.m. of a fire set by someone with a gas can in the 4300 block of Norfolk Ave. in Northwest Baltimore, the spokesman said.

The incident may have been related to a domestic dispute, Brown said. Police investigators are also looking into the possibility that Martin may be the ex-boyfriend of one of the occupants of the burned house, said Detective Jeremy Silbert, another Baltimore Police spokesman.

City police identified a suspect in the fire and asked county police to verify his address, said county police spokesman Cpl. Mike Hill.

County officers arrived about 4 a.m. at the house in the 3600 block of Bellmore Road, where the suspect answered the door, according to the spokesman.

"He slammed the door and retreated into the house," Hill said.

Unsure whether the man had any weapons in the house, and noting that his wife was present, police treated it as a barricade situation.

Martin surrendered at 7:40 a.m., Hill said.

Baltimore Fire Department spokesman Roman Clark said several people were in the house on Norfolk Street at the time of the fire, but no one was injured.

He said investigators had not determined whether the fire had been set.
