Jury selection was continuing Tuesday afternoon for the trial of a 60-year-old woman accused of killing her estranged husband after sneaking into the Glen Arm home they once shared, almost exactly a year after the shooting.
Mary C. Koontz, who has been in custody since her husband's death June 19, 2009, intends to claim insanity, according to prosecutors. Her husband was Ronald G. Koontz, a former teacher and wrestling coach at Towson High School who later became an administrator in the Baltimore County school system.
Twice postponed, the trial will be overseen by Baltimore County Circuit Judge Thomas J. Bollinger Sr. The prosecutor will be Deputy State's Attorney Robin S. Coffin, who obtained convictions against a Rodgers Forge couple who beat and starved their infant son.
Koontz faces seven charges, including first-degree murder and first-degree assault. The prosecution intends to seek a sentence of life in prison without parole.
The couple's teenage daughter, Kelsey, was present at the shooting. Police said Mary Koontz moved to the couple's condominium in Florida after her husband obtained a court order in November 2007 forcing her to be evaluated for mental illness. She returned in June last year, gained access to the Glen Arm house and shot him numerous times, police said.
