Heavy footed-drivers now will be cited if they are driving more than 12 miles over the posted speed limit around three Baltimore County schools.

The Baltimore County Police Department announced it will begin issuing citations for speed violations in the 7000 block of Dunmanway, around the area of Dundalk Middle and Elementary schools; and in the 1200 block of Sulphur Spring Road, around the area Arbutus Middle School.

The cameras will operate from Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., including during summer months, police said. Tickets will carry a fine of $40, but no points will be assessed. Warnings will be issued for the first 30 days, police said.

The Baltimore County Council approved legislation authorizing the use of speed cameras in 15 school zones in September. The remaining 13 cameras will soon be operational, the police department said in a release.

Between 2005 and 2007 there were 1,794 speed-related traffic accidents within a half-mile radius of schools in Baltimore County, excluding major highways, according to the Baltimore County Police Department website.
