Samuel Roop Woodward, a coordinator at a West Baltimore tire recycling firm and a longtime Towson resident, died Monday of prostate cancer at the Baltimore Veterans Administration Medical Center. He was 70.

Mr. Woodward, the son of a flour mill owner and a homemaker, was born in Baltimore and raised in Westminster.

After graduating from the Charlotte Hall Military Academy in 1957, he entered the Air Force, where he served with the 322nd Airborne.

Discharged in 1961, he became the owner of Dart's Pizza, which was near the old Memorial Stadium. After selling the restaurant in 1972, he sold and taught Dale Carnegie courses.

For the past 40 years, he worked as a coordinator for Emanuel Tire Co., which recycles old tires.

Mr. Woodward enjoyed fishing and going to the movies.

He was a communicant of Trinity Episcopal Church in Towson.

A private memorial service will be held Saturday.

Surviving are his wife of 36 years, the former Lois Byrd, a hairstylist; and three sisters, Phoebe Woodward of Cedar Bluff, Ala., Jane Sutton of Sykesville and Edith Longley of Reisterstown.
