Woman testifies on her abduction, rape

Baltimore Sun

Disguised by a wig and dark glasses, a 30-year-old former stripper described to a jury Tuesday how two men abducted her from a Baltimore street corner nine years ago, pistol-whipped and blindfolded her, drove her to a park and raped her at gunpoint.

"I started screaming, asking God to please help me," she said. "I was getting ready to die."

Sitting in the witness stand before Baltimore County Circuit Judge Ruth A. Jakubowski, the woman pointed to Rhassan Harcum, 31, one of the men she said committed the assault Sept. 28, 2000.

The other defendant, Charnard Demon Jones, also 31, pleaded guilty to first-degree rape earlier Tuesday and was given a 20-year sentence.

The charges in the case came after DNA evidence surfaced two years ago that pointed to one of the two suspects. His arrest led to that of the other man.

In court, the woman identified Harcum as the driver of the white Acura that stopped beside her at Baltimore and Holliday streets as she looked for a taxi about 2 a.m. after work.

Bundled into the rear seat, her head covered, the woman was taken to Woodlawn Memorial Park in Gwynn Oak. The assaults took place in the car, she said.

Afterward, she testified, one of the two attackers urinated on her. They also doused her with alcohol to make her appear intoxicated, she said they told her. The men took her purse and left her in the park, she said.

A county police officer driving north on Woodlawn Drive heard screaming, turned back and found the disheveled woman. Donald Anderson, now a homicide detective, testified that she was "very hysterical and upset." He relayed her description of her attackers to other officers and took her to Greater Baltimore Medical Center.

The woman said she was so afraid of her assailants that she initially gave a false name to police and nurses.

Harcum remained impassive throughout her testimony. The trial is to continue today.
