Margaret B. "Peg" Meckley, a homemaker and a former substitute teacher, died of bladder cancer Nov. 22 at her York, Pa., home.

The longtime Timonium resident was 79.

Margaret Betts, the daughter of a college professor and a homemaker, was born in Iowa City, Iowa. When she was 8, she moved with her family to State College, Pa., when her father joined the faculty of Pennsylvania State University.

She earned a bachelor's degree in 1952 in education from Penn State, and that same year married Robert A. Meckley.

The couple settled in Timonium where, in addition to raising her children, Mrs. Meckley was a substitute teacher in Baltimore County public schools.

Mrs. Meckley held a private pilot's license and enjoyed playing bass fiddle in a jazz band. She also was a member of the Red Hat Society.

A resident of York since 2003, Mrs. Meckley was a former member of the Towson Golf & Country Club and Havenwood Presbyterian Church.

She was a member of Regents' Glen Country Club in York.

Services were held Saturday in York.

In addition to her husband, a retired IBM marketing executive, Mrs. Meckley is survived by two sons, Michael J. Meckley of Westminster and Douglas B. Meckley of Kaiserslautern, Germany; two daughters, Karen Wingard of Timonium and R. Lynn Meckley of Indonesia; nine grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
