A Jewish Community Center in Owings Mills and a Jewish day school in Annapolis received bomb threats Monday amid a rash of incidents reported at JCCs and Jewish day schools across the country.
The threat was called into the front desk of the Rosenbloom Owings Mills JCC around 10 a.m., JCC of Greater Baltimore CEO Barak Hermann wrote in an email to members. Hermann said the JCC notified Baltimore County police and that authorities believe the threats are similar to other threats JCCs around the country have received.
Hermann said the JCC's security team determined it was safe and was resuming regular operations.
"After consultation and conducting an extensive sweep of the building, we determined that an evacuation of the JCC was not required," he said. "We continue to make security and safety our foremost priority. We are closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI, as well as the Secure Community Network (SCN), which is focused on security for Jewish institutions throughout North America."
The JCC on Park Heights Avenue in Baltimore received two previous hoax bomb threats.
The Aleph Bet Jewish Day School in Annapolis also received a phone bomb threat Monday morning, Annapolis police said. The school was evacuated and determined to be safe. Authorities did not know whether the incident was tied to the threats at the JCCs.
The Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School in Rockville also received a bomb threat Monday morning, the center reported on its Twitter account. And some 200 people were evacuated from a Jewish Community Center in York, Pennsylvania, after a caller told the front desk there was a bomb in the building, said Melissa Plotkin, the York JCC's director of community engagement and diversity.
The JCC Association of North America said there were 21 incidents of bomb threats called into 13 JCCs and eight Jewish day schools in 12 states Monday. All buildings were declared safe, the JCC Association said.
