A household moving company in Pikesville has been shut down by the Department of Transportation. Direct Movers was operating without insurance and failing to provide records in cases where customers have accused the company of holding their possessions hostage, a DOT spokeswoman said.
The company's DOT number, which allows it to operate as a licensed mover, was revoked last week, according to Marissa Padilla, a spokeswoman for the department. She wouldn't get into specifics of the allegations but she said at least two customers complained that the company had not delivered possessions for the agreed-upon price.
Customers who are still in contract with Direct Movers are encouraged to go to http://www.protectyourmove.com or call a hotline for assistance at 1-888-DOT-SAFT, Padilla said. The DOT's Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is actively monitoring the company and awaiting records in the cases in question.
Calls to Direct Movers seeking comment were not immediately returned.
