Baltimore County police arrest rental truck driver who runs out of gas on I-695; highway temporarily closed

A person driving a Budget truck was arrested Tuesday after running out of gas while fleeing from police who were trying to pull the vehicle over, officials said.

Baltimore County Police said the vehicle was a “suspicious rental truck." It caused Interstate 695 to temporarily shut down in both directions while police investigated the situation. All lanes of the outer loop and two left lanes of the inner loop were open as of 2 p.m.

Baltimore County Police spokeswoman Officer Jennifer Peach said the rental truck was speeding on Interstate 83 when an officer tried to pull the driver over. But the truck fled and drove onto 695 near Providence Road where it ran out of gas, Peach said.

Peach said the officer called in the vehicle as “suspicious” after noticing damage to the truck that concerned him.

Officers decided to close all of 695 until the K9 unit finished its sweep and the Hazardous Devices Team investigated.

Peach said the interstate was “quickly” opened back up. Police did not find anything inside the truck, Peach said.

The driver was arrested for fleeing, though police did not release the name.
