Balto. Co. Council approves $17.2 million for air conditioning at five schools

The Baltimore County Council on Monday approved spending $17.2 million to air condition schools in Middle River, Parkville, Pikesville, Windsor Mill and Woodlawn.

County Executive Kevin Kamenetz requested the funding for Featherbed Lane, Hawthorne, Scotts Branch and Wellwood International elementary schools; and Parkville Middle School. In August, the state Board of Public Works approved $11.7 million in state funding to go toward the air conditioning projects for those schools.

The county funding was generated through a 2012 bond sale. School officials expect to start installing the air conditioning in spring 2014 and finish by spring 2015.

Nearly 120 county schools now have air conditioning or are slated to get it, while 38 remain without plans to install air conditioning, county officials said.

Also Monday, council members approved a measure by Councilmen Tom Quirk and David Marks to require developers to install bike racks in new developments in certain commercial areas of Arbutus, Lansdowne, Loch Raven and Perry Hall.

The legislation is intended to promote bicycling. The council approved a similar bill earlier this year covering parts of Catonsville and Towson.
