Man gets probation in theft from Pets on Wheels

A man charged with stealing from a therapy-pet organization was sentenced last week to a year of probation, court records show.

David Robert Rummel Jr., 50, pleaded guilty May 5 in Baltimore County Circuit Court to a misdemeanor count of conspiracy to commit theft from Pets on Wheels. The organization sends therapy dogs and other pets to schools, nursing homes and other facilities to comfort people.

Rummel's estranged wife, Victoria Lee Rummel, 50, is the former executive director of the organization. Prosecutors said the Rummels stole more than $20,000 from the non-profit's operating account, starting in 2009.

David Rummel received a three-year suspended sentence and a year of supervised probation, according to online court records. His attorney, John Grason Turnbull III, declined to comment on the case.

Assistant State's Attorney Adam Lippe said David Rummel has paid "full restitution" to Pets on Wheels. As part of a plea agreement, the state dropped a felony theft charge against him.

Victoria Rummel pleaded guilty in April to one count of felony theft and is awaiting sentencing.
