Illinois man, 51, charged in hours-long barricade inside ex-girlfriend's Pikesville home

A 51-year-old Illinois man was arrested and charged with breaking into and barricading himself for hours inside his ex-girlfriend's Pikesville home Friday morning, police said.

Wayland L. Clay, of Rock Island, Ill., faces first-degree burglary, first-degree assault and related charges, Baltimore County police said.

A woman called police at about 5:15 a.m. to the home in the 3900 block of Princely Way, and they saw her running out when they arrived. She told police that Clay, her ex-boyfriend, had a gun inside. He does not live at the home; he had broken in and was alone inside during the barricade, police said.

Clay is charged also with breaking into the same home on May 23, police said.

Police asked nearby residents to stay inside their homes during the barricade and drivers to avoid the area.

Clay surrendered at about 9:30 a.m. and was taken to a hospital for evaluation. He is being held at the Baltimore County Detention Center on $750,000 bail in the Friday case. Another $250,000 bail has been set for the earlier alleged break-in, police said.
