No criminal charges will be filed against two Baltimore County firefighters who were accused of sexual improprieties at the Reisterstown Volunteer Fire Co., the county's top prosecutor said Tuesday.
The men, who work for the county as paid firefighters and also volunteer at the Reisterstown firehouse, were suspended in March amid a criminal investigation that began in January.
Baltimore County State's Attorney Scott D. Shellenberger said Tuesday that "an extensive investigation" by police found insufficient evidence to prove criminal wrongdoing.
"It was our opinion that the allegations did not rise to the level that could result in a conviction for any criminal offense," Shellenberger said.
He declined to detail the nature of the allegations. Police have referred to the probe as a "sexual misconduct" investigation. Police spokesman Cpl. John Wachter said the department had no comment on the case.
The firefighters remain suspended without pay from the county department, said Elise Armacost, a spokeswoman for the fire and police departments. She said further disciplinary action was pending, but did not elaborate.
The firefighters are also suspended from their duties at the Reisterstown station. Volunteer fire companies in Baltimore County receive some government funding but are independent organizations.
Reisterstown Volunteer Fire Co. President J.P. Snyder said in a statement that company members cooperated with county police. He said the station is now conducting its own internal investigation.
"During this assertive probe, we will determine if the actions of our members were consistent with RVFC policy and values," Snyder said.
