A woman died and a man was injured after fire broke out in a Lansdowne home early Thursday morning, according to a Baltimore County Fire spokesman.
When firefighters responded to the 2200 block of Alletta Avenue at 2:41 a.m. there was already heavy fire in the basement and smoke throughout the one-and-a-half-story home, said the spokesman, Fire Director Glenn Blackwell.
An injured man was outside, and firefighters extricated a woman, who was pronounced dead at the scene, Blackwell said. The man was taken to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center with potentially serious injuries, the spokesman said. The woman's name has not been released.
A firefighter was also taken to a hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening, Blackwell said.
The fire wasn't brought under control until 4:15 a.m., after a Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. crew was able to shut off a gas leak, he said. The balloon-frame construction of the home made it easy for fire to disperse throughout the home, Blackwell added.
Damage is estimated at $100,000 to the structure and contents, he said. The fire's cause is under investigation.
