Water and sewage overflow floods homes in Dundalk

Nearly 250,000 gallons of sewage and water spilled out of manholes in Dundalk early Friday morning, flooding several basements and closing a road, according to Baltimore County public works officials.

The problem started when a Baltimore city water line broke, sending water into the North Point Village Sewage Pumping Station at 7618 North Battle Grove Road, officials said.

The water combined with wastewater and surged out of two manholes. Several basements were flooded and East Battle Grove Road was closed during repairs, officials said. A total of 247,000 gallons of sewage and water were spilled.

The spill started at about 3:30 a.m. and was stopped at 7:25 a.m.

Crews remained at the site on Friday and were clearing debris and gravel that the water swept into the pumping station.

Some of the sewage reached Bear Creek, so county officials are warning people to avoid contact with the creek's water.
