Officer involved in fatal crash in Middle River revealed

Baltimore County Police on Friday revealed the last name of the police officer involved in a crash resulted in the death of a 78-year-old man in Middle River on Dec. 9.

Police said Officer Ruth, an eight-year veteran of the Essex Precinct, was involved in the incident. Police said that under its policy only last names of officers are listed in such incidents.

Thomas Casimer Degutis, of the 200 block of Kingston Park, Middle River, died at the scene of the collision, which occurred just after 11 a.m. at the intersection of Eastern Boulevard and Kingston Road.

Police said the officer was responding to a hit-and-run call when the collision occurred, and was traveling westbound on Eastern Boulevard. The vehicle being driven by Degutis was traveling southbound on Old Eastern Avenue. Degutis was not involved in the hit-and-run call, police said.

Degutis was declared dead at the scene. Officer Ruth suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital, police said
