Man dies after canoe capsizes in Essex

A man died when his canoe capsized in the Bird River in Essex early Saturday morning, Baltimore County police said.

Rescuers were called at 2:24 a.m. Saturday to the 6600 block of Blackhead Road where the victim's friend, 24-year-old Paul Lovelace of Randallstown, said both fell into the water. Lovelace said he was able to return to shore but could not find his friend.

Lovelace pointed to a rope attached to a tree and said that it was his friend's safety line. Officers pulled on the line, pulling a man out of the water, and then performed CPR on him.

He was taken to Franklin Square Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Lovelace was also taken to the hospital.
