An art teacher at Stemmers Run Middle School in Essex has been arrested and charged with five counts of possession of child pornography, officials said Thursday.
Detectives with the Baltimore County Crimes Against Children Unit arrested 49-year-old Craig Clontz, according to a news release from the police department. None of the images recovered depicted county school students, according to the release.
As a result, Clontz, is on administrative leave, said Charles Herndon, spokesman for Baltimore County Public Schools.
He is being held at the Baltimore County Detention Center without bond.
Clontz started his job at Stemmers Run in August, Herndon said. Before that, he was an art teacher at Catonsville Middle School from August 2021 to July 2022.
“These charges are deeply troubling and are a violation of our school’s core values and the values of our school system,” read letters shared with the school communities. “We understand that students and staff who knew Mr. Clontz may have questions and concerns about this arrest and may need to speak with someone to process their feelings in a safe space.”
Counseling staff will be on site at the two schools Friday and next week, according to the letters.
