State police: One dead in Interstate 795 hit-and-run crash, suspect in custody

Police have located a suspect in a hit-and-run on Interstate 795 where a 71-year-old Carroll County man died Wednesday.

Maryland State Police wrote in a news release that officers were called to northbound I-795 just south of the Franklin Boulevard exit in Baltimore County for a report of a crash.

Upon arriving, officers found a single vehicle that had struck a tree. The driver and sole occupant was taken to Northwest Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police identified the victim as William Fanning, 71, of Westminster.

Witnesses say they saw a car sideswipe the victim’s vehicle without stopping, causing him to veer off the roadway and into a tree, police wrote.

Police said they have located the suspect and placed him custody, but are withholding his identity “pending arrest.”

“Troopers from the Maryland State Police CRASH Team are conducting the investigation and will consult with the Baltimore County State’s Attorney before making an arrest and placing charges,” state police wrote.

Police wrote that Baltimore County officers located the suspect’s 2010 Nissan Rouge after 7:30 p.m. “with obvious front end damage in a parking lot in Woodlawn.” He was taken into custody without incident.
