Roland Park Country School wasn't at the top of its game, but the Reds had just enough to outlast an inspired John Carroll team, 14-13, in overtime in an Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference matchup at Roland Park Tuesday.
John Carroll went ahead, 13-12, when Grace Richards sprinted from behind the net and unleashed a shot to the upper-right corner with nine seconds remaining in the first of two three-minute overtime sessions.
Senior midfielder Francesca Whitehurst made it 13-13 with one second left on her sixth goal of the game in the first overtime period, sprinting nearly half the field after getting the ball off the draw.
Jenna Janes scored the game-winner with 2:04 remaining, beating senior goalie Katy Sharretts with a low shot.
Roland Park also received solid performances from freshman goalie Olivia Cohen (7 saves) and sophomore Cameron McGee (3 goals).
"At this point in the year, overtime is a great lesson," Roland Park coach Kristin Nicolini said. "It's a really good way to push past those 50 minutes and see what you are capable of when your backs are against the wall."
John Carroll (5-4 overall, 3-4 league) had a chance to tie in the final seconds after working the ball around the Roland Park goal, but the Patriots failed to get off a shot.
"It was a frantic final seconds," said John Carroll coach Abbey Swift, whose team was playing in its third overtime game of the season. "It was pass, pass, pass. We were getting a little too excited."
John Carroll trailed for most of the game, and with 4:58 remaining in regulation, the Patriots tied it at 10-10 on Caroline Sdanowich's goal.
Sdanowich finished with four goals and teammate Kara Klages, a senior midfielder, scored a team-high five.
But Roland Park (10-3, 7-2) regained the lead, getting back-to-back goals from Chelsea Kovinsky and Whitehurst over the next 2:50 to go ahead 12-10.
John Carroll, however, tied the game again when Klages scored consecutive goals 21 seconds apart in the final 1:30 to force overtime.
It was quite a second-half performance for the Patriots, who outscored the Reds, 8-4, in the period.
John Carroll had trailed 7-1 midway through the first half.
"I told them during a timeout, 'We have to leave everything out there out on the field,'" Swift said. "We really came together as a team."
