Boys' Latin baseball won its fifth straight game and continued to play like one of the best teams in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conference.
The Lakers combined pitching and hitting to beat host Park, 9-6, in nine innings Wednesday at Sugar Campus in Stevenson.
Junior Dom Maggio drove in the winning run in the top of the ninth on a single to right field.
Maggio knocked in Skyler Morris, who had doubled to lead off the inning. Marquise Washington drove in Max Keefe on a single and Maggio scored on an error to account for the Lakers' other runs in the ninth.
Maggio, who will attend Wake Forest University on a football scholarship as a place kicker and punter, has been on a tear, batting .650 with five extra base hits and 10 RBIs.
"He is just on fire," Boys' Latin Latin coach Bill Greenwell said. "He was killing everything in our three games in South Carolina. He has a lot of natural ability. He doesn't work at it a lot in the offseason, but he is just a very good athlete."
Maggie also is a standout pitcher. The right-hander combined with junior Justin Ward to limit Park to three hits over five innings.
Liam Madden pitched a scoreless ninth to earn the save.
Boys' Latin ace Skyler Morris, the winning pitcher, pitched three innings and had a 6-1 lead in the seventh, but his defense let him down. The Bruins (1-4) scored five unearned runs on three errors to tie the game.
Micah Saltzberg opened the inning with a single to right field. After Ryan Gilbert reached on an error, Stephan Babij struck out.
The next batter, Devin Lowe, loaded the bases on an error.
Morris issued a walk to Alex Kalvar to force in Saltzberg. The pitcher gave up two more hits — including a two-run double to Jake Palumbo — and four runs before getting the last two batters of the inning to ground out.
"We showed resilience today," Park coach George Cooper said. "It was gutsy. We gave them a shock at the end. I think that's a credit to our players."
Boys' Latin built a 5-0 lead off of starter Palumbo, a right-hander.
The Lakers pushed one run across in the first inning, then added two more in the third and fifth before some late struggles.
"I think it was important that we had a tough game," Greenwell said. "We haven't had a lot of tough games up until this point. There are some really good teams in our league and we really need to be ready to play at the top level."
