Hampden gearing up for Honfest with lots of art and fun

So this column is a big one as we have a number of things coming up in the next few weeks.

First, on Tuesday, June 2, Meadow Mill Athletic Club, 3600 Clipper Mill Rd., hosts a Yappy Hour from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Maryland Animal Sanctuary (MAS) will bring adorable animals for you to meet. There will be appetizers and $1 from every beer and wine will go to benefit MAS and Rescue.

On June 4, photographer Josh Sinn, who is also curating the Hampden In Pictures photography show in June 5 at Eightbar, 3620 Falls Rd., has his own solo show, Fogged Up, opening at the Golden West Cafe's Long Bar, 1105 W. 36th St. According to the event invite, "Fogged Up explores how fog can adjust the urban and natural landscape, both visually and psychologically, especially at nighttime." Fogged Up runs until June 30 (with a closing night reception taking place then 7-9 p.m.).

Union Craft Brewing, 1700-D Union Ave., hosts Black Friday 2.2 on Friday, June 5, starting at 6 p.m. This means a whole hog barbecue, other foods, DJ BohFunk spinning old school funk and soul and, of course, a veritable river of delicious Union Craft beer!

On June 11, cartoonists Jason Little (Borb), Sara Lautman (Macrogroan) and Preston Spurlock will be at Atomic Books, 3620 Falls Rd., to show and discuss their work.

And then, it's Honfest time! Café Hon's 22nd annual, self-described "celebration in honor of … the historic working women of Baltimore" takes place on Saturday, June 13, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday, June 14, noon to 6 p.m.

On Saturday, on the WLOY Stage at 36th And Chestnut will feature Janice B, Pressing Strings, Sweet Leda, Angela Sheik, Saving Apollo, Maria Dontas, Don Kim, and more. Over on The Falls Rd Stage at Falls Rd. and 36th St. features Qi Lo, The 1974, Vonkoh, Whisky Train, Rob Fahey & the Pieces and more.

On Sunday, the WLOY Stage features Red Sammy, Caleb Stine & The Brakemen, Saleem and The Music Lovers. Greasy Hands, Hymn For Her and more. The Falls Rd. Stage features Getamungstit, Old Eastern, 9 Mile Roots and Bristol Blue.

The Domino Sugar Contest Stage on 36th St., aka the "main stage," features various Hon contests, dance contests, tap dancers, Fluid Movement, Greenberry Kids Fashion Show, DJ Landis Expandis, Baltimore's Best Mustache Contest, and more on Saturday. And on Sunday, there is the Depraved Ukulele Orchestra, an Oyster Shucking Contest, Hypnotic Panties and more.

All that and a bunch of food vendors, craft vendors exhibiting handmade wares, non-profit and (of course) corporate vendors. Oh yeah, if you attend, do local merchants a favor and stop into their shops, too, and check them out. They'd be ever so grateful.
