April is kindest month for record lovers

As far as months go, April in Hampden is a big one for record lovers.

On Wednesday, April 15, there's a free show at Holy Frijoles, 908 W. 36th St., at 10 p.m. The Swedish Fist, Kerra Holtgren and Robert "Fireball" Mitchell all play, as well as the awesomely named, Whiskey Shivers, a ragtag five-piece band from Austin, Texas, featuring banjo, washboard, bass, guitar and fiddle.

On Friday, April 17, one of Maryland's finest meaderies, Millstone Cellars (out of Monkton) comes to The Wine Source, 3601 Elm Ave., for a tasting of their ciders and meads from 4:30-7 p.m..

For people who like the deliciousness of wine, but prefer the convenience of a box, the Wine Source hosts a El Libre Box Wine Tasting from 1-4 p.m. on Saturday, April 18,

April 18 also is Record Store Day. This is a special day every year, when a bunch of special, limited edition records are released to independent record stores. In Hampden, we have JoJo South Records, 718 W. 36th St., the True Vine, 3544 Hickory Ave., and Celebrated Summer Records, 3616 Falls Rd. This year features special releases from Metallica, NWA, The Hold Steady, Venom, Father John Misty, Run The Jewels, The Germs, Neko Case, Ah-Ha, Thelonious Monk, Erasure, X, Gram Parsons, R.E.M., Death Cab For Cutie, Dionee Warwick, Grandmaster Flash, David Bowie, Mastodon, Sun Ra, and many, many, more. Check your local record shop for availability and events. Also, lines start early, so plan to make a day of it.

And if you like listening to music on records, you'll love Wax Wednesdays at the Golden West Cafe. 1105 W. 36th St. Every Wednesday, at 10:30 p.m. in their Long Bar, they'll have different DJs playing different kinds of music.

On April 8, DJ Champagne will play punk and country. On April 15, Trevor & Sara will play American Cosmic Music. On April 22, DJ Jem will play Psych, Garage and Post-Punk. On April 29, David Spelce plays rare rock, punk and psych.

April 22, The Other Corner, 850 W. 36th St., hosts its first in what they hope to be an annual Foozball Tournament at 7 p.m.. The will be awesome prizes for the winners (like dinners at the Corner BYOB). The roster is limited, so you need to call 443-869-5075 ASAP to register.

On April 23, Writers Under The Influence, the Eightbar, Atomic Books, 3620 Falls Rd., poetry series hosted by local writer Liz Hazen welcomes poets Aaron Belz and Piotr Gwiazda who will read some of their work and discuss their influences over drinks. It starts at 7 p.m. and is free.

And finally, be sure to stop by the Golden West Cafe by April 29 to check out Libby Formant's art show, Hope, which features her paintings and illustrations. There will also be a closing night reception for the show on April 29, from 7-9 p.m..
