Heavy rains have damaged the slate roof of Baltimore Clayworks' historic gallery and administrative office building on Smith Avenue in Mount Washington, Executive Director Sarah McCann said Tuesday.
The damage is contained to a small area of the 1898 structure, a former convent, McCann said. Repairs are expected to cost around $5,000 and are only partially covered by insurance, she said.
Hardest hit is an apartment that is used for artists from out of town about four times a year. Its ceiling fell in Wednesday night, McCann said.
"It was a visiting artist space. We weren't using it much," she said.
Leakage around the chimney area has also affected a kitchen in the stone building, she said.
But the damage to the overall building is not considered major.
"It's still usable," McCann said.
McCann on Thursday sent a group email that was originally intended to promote the organization's Seconds Sale, which starts Friday with a preview party from 6-8 p.m., and continues Saturday and Sunday with the sale, which is traditionally Clayworks' main funding source for maintenance projects. But the top of the email announces the damage and seeks additional funding, saying, "We need your help!"
