Baltimore police accused a woman of covering for her boyfriend, a suspect in the murder of a one-year-old boy in Cherry Hill, by trying to file a false theft report for the getaway car used in the killing, according to charging documents obtained Saturday.
Breyon Cason, 22, of the 800 block of Druid Hill Park Lake Drive, was charged with accessory after the fact and making a false statement to a police officer on May 31. She was released after posting a $175,000 bail.
Carter Scott was killed and his father Rashaw Scott badly injured when gunmen opened fire on the car they were riding in at a Cherry Hill housing complex. Police said one of the men charged in the shootings, Eddie Tarver, 21, fled the scene in a dark gray Toyota Solara, making his way to West Baltimore where he crashed into a parked car and was arrested.
That car is registered to Cason, according to the charging papers, and she tried to report it stolen three hours after Scott had been pronounced dead. But police believe that was an attempt to conceal the involvement of the car and her live-in boyfriend Rashid "Dex" Mayo, 22, in the murder, the document shows.
Cason could not be reached for comment and no lawyer is listed for her in court records.
Police publicly announced that Mayo was a suspect in the case and that he had fled to New York. He has not been arrested, and Cason refused to answer questions about where he might be, according to the charging document.
A third man, Cornell Harvey, 26, has also been charged in the murder and shooting. The three defendants who have been arrested are next due in court in September.
