Water main break causes outages in Windsor Mill

A city water main break in the 5400 block of West Forest Park Avenue closed roads Wednesday and cut off supply to several homes and a day-care center in the Windsor Mills neighborhood. The 20-inch main, which broke during the early morning hours, has also caused some water outages at Kernan Hospital, although there has been no impact to patient safety, officials said.

"The hospital is functioning normally," said Kurt Kocher, spokesman for the Baltimore City Department of Public Works. "Patient safety is not compromised, and we have run hoses there to help keep the chiller system in water."

But the hospital did have to cancel surgeries scheduled for Wednesday and close its out-patient clinics, officials said.

Crews are pumping water from the site and are preparing to lay new pipe near the intersection of West Forest Park Drive and Windsor Mill Road, which is at the hospital's delivery entrance. Forest Park Drive will remain closed for several hours to traffic from Purnell Drive to Windsor Mill Road.
