Man seriously burned in explosion at house in Northwest Baltimore

A man suffered serious burns early Thursday in an explosion that leveled a house in Northwest Baltimore, according to a Fire Department spokesman.

Firefighters responded about 1:45 a.m. to the 5800 block of Key Ave., near Sulgrave Avenue, where a one-and-a-half-story brick home had collapsed, with fire at the rear gas meter, according to the spokesman, Chief Kevin Cartwright.

A man in the rear of the home was found with third-degree burns to his arm and second-degree burns to his nose, face and shoulder, Cartwright said. The victim, who was conscious, was treated at the scene and taken to the burn center at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.

No one else was injured and no other homes were damaged, Cartwright said. Firefighters requested assistance from Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. at the scene.
