Man, 30, charged in killing of teen who was defending sister

Court documents show a 30-year-old man has been charged with murder and attempted murder in a weekend stabbing that killed a 17-year-old who was defending his sister.

Terrance Sims, of the 200 block of N. Bethel St., was arrested Monday and ordered held without bond at a bail review hearing Tuesday. Court records show Sims was charged in a previous murder in 2000, pleading guilty to manslaughter and receiving five years in prison.

Detective Raymond Yost wrote in charging documents that Sims got into an argument with Rashawnda Gibbs in the 3900 block of W. Garrison Ave. and began to fight with her. Her younger brother Ronald Gibbs tried to help his sister and both of them were stabbed by Sims, Yost wrote.

Gibbs died at Sinai Hospital from multiple stab wounds, while his sister was treated for serious injuries and released Monday. The teenager was a one-time nationally ranked boxer who competed in a national tournament last year and often made the honor roll. He had been watching TV with his sister before the stabbing, according to their father.

Witnesses and suspects identified Sims as the attacker, Yost wrote in court documents. Police said the killing for which Sims pleaded guilty to manslaughter in 2001 involved a fight inside a club that left a 26-year-old man dead.
