Firefighters found the body of a man while fighting a blaze in Northeast Baltimore, according to Baltimore police and news reports.
They responded to the 7000 block of McClean Blvd., in the Dutch Village apartments, at about 2:25 a.m. and found heavy fire and smoke coming from a two-story townhouse, said Baltimore Fire spokesman Chief Kevin Cartwright.
Firefighters found the body of a man on the second floor, and he was pronounced dead at the scene, Cartwright said. Police say they are investigating the death as a homicide. Fire investigators are also working to determine the cause of the fire, Cartwright said.
The body has been sent to the medical examiner's office for an autopsy, according to police.
Two adjacent dwellings were damaged by the blaze and their residents were displaced as a result of fire and water damage, Cartwright said.
The apartment complex has provided shelter for the residents, but the American Red Cross is assisting four households, totaling 11 people, with inflatable mattresses, food, clothing and counseling, according to a spokesman.
